The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
A Different Direction
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it pioneered the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
